Back after a year! Time just flies.

Here is a party summer dress. The pattern is homemade, basically a fitted bodice with a semi-circle skirt. The dress is entirely lined and a lace trimming is sewn on the bottom edge of the skirt lining.

The outer fabric is a beautiful (and oh so girly!) cotton lawn bought from online UK retailer Seamstar and the lining is also made of cotton lawn, but nothing fancy - just from my local fabric store.

I really wanted to use this Liberty's lawn I bought last year at Fabrics Galore. I love it! I hardly ever wear flowery clothes (my closet it sort of minimalistic in style: plains or stripes mainly - I'm a jeans girl!) but I had a crush a while back on a flowery Gérard Darel dress and I've been thinking of it ever since. But of course, I didn't have enough fabric to sew the dress of my dreams* so I went for the E dress of the "Stylish Dress Book". It isn't that I don't like the dress (I obviously wouldn't have spent that much time on it) but it simply wasn't my first choice. So after tracing the pattern and cutting the fabric, I decided to have a look at the Japan Couture Addict Forum and panic seized me. Will I end up with a pregnancy dress? Will my arms fit through the sleeve holes? etc etc. Of course I had not adjusted the pattern according to their advice but now I just had to go for it.

Do I like it or not? I think I do! I cannot say I love it but it could look cool with the right leggings and shoes. Well, I have not really made up my mind yet. (and theres a little fold at the top right ... I hope it is not obvious when the dress is worn).

I love these japanese sewing books. they are so cool! But I am not sure I am built for those models. Well I need to try a couple more before deciding.

Next one will be a burda though.

* Next time, I will chose a pattern first and the the right amount of fabric!

Merci, An!

I will never fear zippers again.

This cute little bubble dress is Straight Grain's peplum bubble dress. The pattern is free and you can download it from the website (after liking the page so it seems). Thanks An!

I have had the pattern for a bit but the fact that it involved inserting a (concealed or invisible) zipper (you could use buttons but buttonholes are another problem, my machine seems to dislike them) gave me enough reason to postpone the project.

Finally I decided to sew it and not only did I face the zipper situation - but I decided to line the bodice (I was not too excited about the zipper sitting on my baby's raw skin in the summer), which would of course complicate the procedure even further.

Fortunately, the web galaxy is full of very generous people willing to share their skills and I found this amazing tutorial on how to insert a concealed zipper on a lined bodice (which involved catching the zipper tape between the outer fabric and the lining). Thanks Jennifer!

The fabric is a pure cotton from Fabrics Galore in Battersea, I have no idea who from but it is of a very nice quality!

I did write las week that more was coming soon ... and I did not lie. This week I managed to finish this little summer dress for Miss C (4). The pattern is from Yuki Araki's "Basiques pour petites filles". This is not my first attempt from this book - but this time I have changed the pattern a bit, by removing the little skirt that was supposed to be sewn on top.

The fabric is unidentified cotton (the salesman told my it was Liberty's (an end of roll) but I have serious doubts about that ...).

I have been working for a while on my girls summer wardrobe but it is taking soooo long! I am so impressed with some bloggers' productivity - how do they do it? I have so much stuff to do and maybe I watch too much TV (I'm a big fan of Danish series and other detectives - but that's got nothing to do). I have however managed to finish a little skirt for Miss M (20 and smthg months) with a left over of fabric already seen here. No pattern, very easy to make.

More to come soon!

PS: first try with photo editing software PicMonkey ...
The reason being that we are busy with the refurbishment of our new house and the planned move (in two days time). Sewing has had to be set aside in favor of more immediately ... necessary tasks (such as decluttering, looking for domestic appliances, etc. etc. the list is endless). But 3 days before the move, I could not resist sudden urge and compromised by going for a very very easy and fast project.

My 3 and a half year old is into skirts and dresses. Does not want to hear about trousers except for leggings. So with the autumn suddenly falling on us, I wanted to upgrade her fall/winter skirt collection a bit and use the beautiful (and girly) baby cord remnants of my fabric box. But I was (almost) doomed - the width of that beautiful cord was just a bit too short! So I decided to include to contrasting side panels, making the skirt a bit less simple than I wanted to (I think that with a fancy fabric pattern, best keep it simple). But who cares, the person most directly concerned likes it so ...

Et, vous constaterez l'étiquette "Made in England".

Here is the Yoke dress from Akiko Mano's Lovely and Girly Girls Clothes (dress B). It is a baptism present for a little one year old so I had to adapt the pattern (they go from size 100 - 3 or 4 years). I did not add any seam allowance and used a 1.5 allowance, instead of the 1cm used in these patterns. The sizing is more or less right.

Although the model is very simple, I found it quite difficult to have nice finishes. It all started off quite badly, the placing of the biais and then the yoke ... I think I'll do a lot more hand stitching next time. But I am still happy with the result :-)

And, you will notice the super cool "Made in England", bought at the V&A Museum. Love it!!

I'm a big fan of this dress from Yuki Araki's "Basiques pour petites filles". I have already sewn a version of it, that you can look at here. I like its soberness - I am not much into frills.
This is a second version of this dress, more summery, very fresh. The fabric is cotton from Fabrics Galore, a great fabric shop between Battersea and Clapham.

Here is my version of the B blouse, from the Stylish Dress Book 1. The Fabric is Jezebel by Anna Fishkin for Red Rooster Fabrics.
The making of this blouse is quite straight-forward. You just need to know that the pattern for the bottom part of the sleeves must be widened by 10cm in order to be gathered and give this bubble effect. I think it is quite a good choice for a beginner seamstress.

My eldest, 3 and a half, is all about ballet at the moment, especially the Sleeping Beauty one, that we went to see a little while back. Ballerinas, witches and finger pricking is all we talk about. And she wanted a black tutu. It most likely is because she was so impressed by the witch Carabosse.

So there we are, with a home sewn black tutu, instructions from (again) Olivier + S' "little things to sew". Small addition: a black lace trimming below the waistline.

Anyone living in London this spring is just waiting for the nice days ... or at least I am!! In the hope to attract summer, I have sewn a reversible baby bucket hat. Although one side is obviously much prettier than the other...

Impossible to shoot the hat on baby's head, it does not even last a second. I'll need to work on that ...

The pattern is from Oliver + S' "little things to sew" (already mentioned here) but also available for FREE on Oliver + S' website, more specifically here.

The top fabric is from Lecien, a Japanese designer. Very nice quality. The bottom fabric is a plain electric blue, bought on Goldhawk road.

A little note on the language of the blog, which has turned bilingual. Feels more natural to me that way.

Cheers!!!
Here we go again with these baby trousers. For the sake of accuracy, I should call them cropped or capri-trousers, because this is what they turned out to be. Front pleated cropped-trousers.

With the Easter holiday (i.e. both kids at home), I had very very little time to make anything. I tried to do a remake of the baby trousers, 1st trial still too narrow but second looking good - although not finished.

The good news is that I started a dress-making course at a community college here in London. I have been wanted to do that for a looong time and here I am!!! I do hope I will learn a lot of good sewing techniques. The thing is that I have to chose a pattern to work on and I just cannot make up my mind! It needs to be a bit challenging of course, and something I like. For the moment, I have two (Japanese) pattern books which to chose from:

I wanted to reproduce some nice pleat front trousers I had bought for my baby daughter. Because it was the first time I made something without a commercial pattern and clear instructions, I used a fabric I did not like that much. I am not even sure why I bought it, the shop man talked me into it, sold it really cheap because it was the end of a roll (probably payed 2£ for over 2m).

I also sewed the hem with a bright pink thread, matching the designs on the fabric (part of the reason is simply because I ran out of brown thread).

The result is, I think quite nice. Surprisingly, I like the way the fabric looks in these little trousers. But ... I don't know how that happened, they ended up so narrow my baby girl's cute bottom cannot fit inside them!! Obviously, I did not draw the pattern right. It is perhaps because I did not take the pleats into account.
Did I ever mention this blog is the journal of a beginner seamstress?

I am back after a 2-week super holiday in Morocco. I cannot begin to tell you how welcome this break was. And what is better than a sunny break at the end of winter?

Of course, I have not been making anything while I was away. I have not bought any fabrics either. You would think you can find fabulous fabrics in Marrakech but actually ... not really. At least, not dress-making ones. Or not to my taste.

I would like to share one of my recent & favorite projects. It is "robe à encolure carrée" from the Japanese sewing book "Basiques pour petites filles" de Yuki Araki.

I love this book's simple but yet sophisticated designs. I strongly recommend it, even for the beginner seamstress. There are quite a few easy projects. Actually, I have only tried the easy ones! The Robe à encolure carrée" is one of those.

I made it in size 100, which should suit a 3 year old. It is a little big for my girl but it still looks nice! I really like the line of this dress. It is simple, yet very flattering. I actually like it so much that I plan to do it over and over again!

The fabrics come from one of the shops in Shepherd's Bush in London. I chose a black satinated cotton, which it really soft - and a contrasting brown dotty cotton.

But I wanted to share with you how I actually got started. Because talking to friends, I realise that quite a lot of people just don't know where to start.
My first step was buying a sewing machine. I got myself a very basic Singer sewing machine. I was not sure that I was actually going to get into all this so I took it easy.
Then, I got myself this book: Stitch by Stitch: Learning to Sew, One Project at a Time.

This book is great for anyone who wants to get started. It tells you what you need in terms of supplies, teaches you basic notions, how to thread you sewing machine, and gets you going with easy projects. Thanks so much Deborah Moebes!
So there I was, went on line and bought all I needed to buy and set about sewing my first project!! Which I will not be posting, apologies for that, because it was a totally failed project (it was not a project from the book but a simple skirt from the internet). I can tell you why actually.
It was supposed to be a simple skirt, instructions taken from there. The instructions say "Lay out a half yard of fabric". For some reason, I measured a half yard width (45.2 cm). I was so into my project that I did not realise my mistake and let me tell you ... the skirt was so narrow that none of my girls could have worn this skirt! So now I know, half a yard refers to the length. The lesson was learnt!Miss Alicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04535204354775430535noreply@blogger.com0
